2025 in review

2025 was a very busy year. The first half of the year kicked off with a much-needed new laptop purchase, and the tail-end of a three-month recovery period from surgery I had in November 2024. February saw my return to work, and reflection on what I wanted to do in the next year or two.

I started making plans for a new (solopreneur) venture in the second half of the year. I kicked it all off when I resigned from my agency role in November, working out an extended notice period until March 31, 2026.

After a brief respite in April, I am gearing up to shape the rest of 2026 to the plans I want to put in motion with my new business venture. There are a couple of spin-off projects I will be working on, which I'm segmenting into three areas of focus.

Focus #1:

My 9-to-5 replacement

This will be what helps pay the bills; my new client-focused business. I'm going 100% all-in on becoming a Fractional Marketing Manager for hire for businesses. While I was thinking about my services, I found the idea of having to segment all of my services into a packaged price was not sitting with me well. I wanted it to be as simple as I could possibly make it; cue the fractional movement.

I had read about Fractional CMO which sounded exactly like the direction I wanted to go. What had me uncertain was the use of the title, as it gives a particular impression which could turn off the businesses I'd really want to work with the most. Hence, I took the fractional component and brought it down a level from the C-suite to the managerial level.

The thought here made it a much easier sell for me. You get everything I have to offer, for one simple monthly retainer. What if businesses want me for more ad-hoc elements? I can do that too, on request. It keeps my focus simple, and my prices easier to put up-front. Win, win.

Focus #2:

Educational Marketing

I have spent much of the last 4.5 years in my agency role passing on my experience and skills to the other marketers I worked with. Watching them become more confident in their skills - and talking with clients - made me see the merit in their professional development. I follow the belief that a rising tide lifts all boats, and that as a team we're only as strong as our weakest link.

I want to lean more into the educational side of things as time allows, offering my experience and insights where I can. I have a couple of website ideas that I want to work on - one more expansive than the other - where I can share this content. I hope to also include some video content as well, which will be me stepping a bit outside of my comfort zone, but sometimes the most significant growth comes from getting outside our comfort zones once in a while.

Focus #3:

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

Originally I trained at becoming a website developer, with the notion that at some point in the future, I would like to work on launching my own online business. It would be great to give myself the opportunity to launch at least one that could benefit not only my new business, but other businesses too.

I have a couple of ideas that I'm scoping out with the potential viability before I go putting time and effort behind it. Time will tell if this could be a great revenue maker alongside my fractional marketing business. Any way I can diversify my revenue streams in the business will only make my next steps more achieveable.
